In this edition of the Virtual Business Lifestyle Podcast I sit down to talk with one of my all-time favorite authors, bloggers and entrepreneurs. Chris Brogan is easily known to most people doing any type of business online worth talking about! He is also a highly sought-after speaker, extremely well-known web personality, successful business owner, the brains behind Kitchen Table Companies and the popular paid-for weekly newsletter ‘Blog Topics‘, as well as being a best selling author.
I reached out to Chris with the idea to talk to him about beginning, building, growing and capitalizing on relationships. What I got was a full-blown, hands-down business lesson that I will never forget – and niether will you, when you’re done listening / watching.
Amongst other things, myself and Chris discuss:
- How to create loyalty through online relationships.
- How to ‘follow up’ on potential business without becoming a pain!
- Why understanding the relationship ‘dating cycle’ is so important.
- How to be seen as ‘useful’ to your followers and online fans.
- The concept behind ‘Whats in it for me..?’ in business.
- Why Chris is a little ‘touchy feely’ when he meets someone for the first time!!!
- Plus much, much more…

Relationship talk to one side, my conversation with Chris (which took place a while ago… I’ve been waiting for the right time to put it live!) led me to think about so many different aspects of my business – which I knew it would. On the back of this chat I’ve hired more management staff to take care of clients, put in place a COO at my company to be sure that the day-to-day operations are better than ever before, reached out and met not one, but TWO groups of VBL fans in two different cities in the world (San Francisco and London) and decided I’m finally going to write a book – which I am in pre-production on right now!
Inspiring, entertaining and thought-provoking, Chris Brogan is the real deal when it comes to knowing people, and how to win them over in the world of business and life. Spend some more time with Chris over at his blog, and tell him that I sent you over to him. If he doesn’t sound impressed, let me know!!!
I’d love to hear from you on this, the latest installment of the VBL Podcast. Are they getting better? Boring? More entertaining, or rewarding? I’d love to hear your thoughts…

Hi Chris
I’ve been taught to separate business relationships with personal ones. Here you guys are talking about a new trend using social media. You are mixing business with pleasure all the way! Changes are sweeping the world in the way we do business nowadays. Chris B is just as smart and savvy in person as he seems in his book, Trust Agents. Great interview, Chris D.
Mike
Hi Mike
Glad you enjoyed the podcast, buddy.
Smart n savvy Chris is, indeed. I’ve also got his book (obviously!) and have read it twice. Absolutely 100% essential reading for all entrepreneurs nowadays, either online or off.
Thanks for dropping by and commenting.
C
Its been said that the very basic formula to earn online or to get followers is to write great content or produce original information for your readers. Watching this chat has taken my ideas on this stuff to the next level. Thanks guys.
Hi Andy
Well, I think producing original info AND making sure its GREAT is the way to go, thats for sure.
I’m glad that my chat with Chris got you thinking a little more on things. It had the same effect on me, as I said in my post notes.
Keep thinking and keep working hard, bud.
C
Hi Guys!
I’ve been in sales for years and you are so correct when you say that you need to have rebuttals ready to go for every possible objection. I’m a fan of your blog, Chris, but this talk on relationships I say was more related to sales and marketing for business owners.
Awesome stuff.
Glad you enjoyed the conversation, John.
Thanks for dropping by and commenting. Much appreciated.
C
It’s really important to create a lasting impression. I think you guys made this sound a little easier than it actually is – mainly because you are both so friggin great at it (I hate you!). Loved this conversation Chris. One of the best VBL’s yet.
Hi Mark
LOL
Thanks for the kind words, but trust me – nobody has a monopoly on good ideas, or ways to make things happen. The most important thing is the HUSTLE.
If the hustle is there, then everything else will follow… Glad you enjoyed the podcast, bud.
C
The part that I like the most in this podcast is when you asked ChrisB “How to create a relationship with a bigger name online”. As someone that is just getting started online as a blogger I would love to have the chance to interview the top dogs at some point. Thanks ChrisD for such an inspiring guest in ChrisB. I’m now heading over to his blog for a good dig around!
Hi Elise
Hope you enjoyed your ‘dig’ on Chris’ blog. Its a vault of vicious business and life advice. Love it!
Thanks for commenting at the VBL too – I believe it was your first time.
C
You gotta dazzle the person you are trying to connect with. I’ve used the DATING CYCLE analogy before too. Great talk, gentlemen. Thank you for finding the time to joining the VBL ranks, ChrisB.
Hi Abrienda
It’s all a dance, isnt it…?!
Glad you enjoyed the conversation with Chris and that it pressed a few solid buttons for you. The one thing to remember is that relationships should be for long-term, always. In life and business. Unfortunately not everyone feels the same way – but, I know I certainly do.
Thanks for commenting, and good to see you back at VBL!
C
This is super great. Ive been following Chris Brogan since 2005. Thanks for featuring Chris Brogan here on your podcast. You’re on a different level now, Chris.
You’re awesome.
Hi Red
Thanks, bud.
Gad you liked the interview and appreciate your kind words.
Cheers,
C
I heard Chris Brogan is so cool he keeps a real-life mini-giraffe at his office. ; )
Great interview Ducker. I saw Brogan last year at Pubcon and he’s a great speaker – a really smart guy.
Thanks for sharing man!
JC
Hiya Jeff!
HAHAHA. Indeed, the giraffe, or in a separate chinese-whisper moment, I heard it was an untamed ant anter!!! Either way, Chris rocks!!!
Glad you digged the chat – it was easily one of my fave’s so far, and probably always will be, too.
C
If it wasn’t for Chris (Ducker) mentioning it, I wouldn’t have noticed that you got off the “relationship” topic. The “sales” talk got me so interested, it didn’t bother me at all.
Hi Hachie
Glad you liked the sales chat side of things here… I feel like this could have gone on for hours, I believe ChrisB also felt the same, too.
Ultimately though, sales is ALL about relationships, so not really THAT off target!
Thanks for commenting.
C
Chris (B), when it comes to that follow up, what do you suggest you do in circumstances where people ahve said no to you, but you just FEEL you still have a shot with them.
Hi Andrew
Let me jump in, and answer this on behalf of ChrisB – I know he’s busy right now…
Bottom line – you’ll lose 100% of the sales you dont ask for! So, always follow-up, even if someone has said no to you in the past, it doesnt mean its going to be no forever!
Try and get into a situation where you KNOW that youve got something that can help your prospect in regards to a pain or a problem he/she is experiencing right NOW – you’re more likely to get a positive response.
Hope that helps, bud.
C
I’ve been in this situation so much this year and I am scared to make the second follow-up to just get blown off again.
Remember, WIlliam – in sales, its the persistance that pays off above and beyond everything else!
Stick with it, my man…
C
Who would have thought it, Chris Brogan being touchy feely!! LOL – All in all another great addition to your podcast archive, Chris. It never ceases to amaze me at the guests you get on here. You are not a bad “Relationship” guy yourself, obviously!!! Keep it up.
Haha.
Thanks, Christian.
Appreciate the kind words, and I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the chat.
Stay tuned for more awesome guests.
C
As usual, great post! I’m also happy to see Chris Brogan here. Been reading his posts on Personal Branding which I found quite useful when I was starting my niche sites last year. I haven’t watched everything on the video yet, but I’ll definitely get back to watch the rest of it. Thanks Chris B. for sharing your time with us. And more power to you, Chris D.!
Another good one, Chris D. Chris B seems to have been influenced by the author of How to WinFriends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie. He really centers his conversation around the person he’s talking to.
Hi, enjoyed the show with CB the other evening. My mantra is communicate, communicate, communicate. That’s how you keep a good relationship evolving.
Absolutely, Paul.
Couldn’t agree more. Glad you enjoyed the chat, and thanks for dropping by and commenting.
Stay tuned!
C
Fantastic Post, yet again Chris, the whole web is turning more and more to relationships and how when u build trust and give great info it will return to you 100 fold.
Thanks for all the wonderful original info I love coming back here time and time again.
Ps Love the no pop up it is so much more inviting. lol
Hi Diane
Thanks for the kind words, and I hope that you’ll be commenting more and more – now that the pop-up has gone! LOL
You’re right though, the more you ‘work’ at relationships the better they are, and that trust issue is always the most important part, I feel.
Glad you enjoyed the chat – got lots of great feedback on this via Twitter, too. So super stoked everyone enjoyed it so much!
