Anyone that knows anything about the online and affiliate marketing world will already be very familiar with the name of today’s special guest – blogger, author and speaker, John Chow. With over 126,000 subscribers at his blog (121,000 when we recorded our chat!) he is a guy that has many, many people listening when he talks.
I first came across John when I fumbled over his ‘Dot Com Lifestyle‘ video on YouTube quite a while back and was then lucky enough to meet him personally last year. We kept in touch via Twitter and recently I was able to corner him for this freakin’ fantastic talk on the subject of internet marketing, getting started as an affiliate rockstar and basically everything and anything else ‘making money online’.
Throughout our conversation, we discuss, amongst other things:
- How to grow your blogs subscriber numbers over time.
- How to get yourself to the point of taking your first ‘making money online’.
- How to find the perfect affiliate products to promote on your blog.
- Understanding the importance of building a mailing list for your online marketing.
- How to set up an entire auto-responder series to keep your audience engaged.
- The importance of promoting products with built-in continuity for on-going passive income.
- How John averages income of $45,000 a month by blogging full-time and working 2-3 hours a day.
- So many more golden pieces of advice!

One of the biggest takeaways for me from this conversation is that it is all down to the individual, and how they are alloting their time and energy when it comes to focusing on their online money making activities. Sure, John makes it look pretty easy, but, don’t forget he’s been doing this stuff a long time, and I’m sure he’s made plenty of mistakes along the way.
Stay focused, hone in on the skills you already posses – whether that be techie skill based, your passion, your experience in business, or simply your drive and ambition and exploit the living daylights out of it.
To find out more on John and what he’s all about, be sure to visit his blog at JohnChow.com, as well as follow him on Twitter, too. You’ll also be smart to download a copy of his ‘Make Money Online’ eBook, too, which you can get for free at his blog.

Hi Hasan
Glad you liked the conversation, buddy.
Stay tuned to the blog / podcast, I have got a TON of AWESOME episodes coming up… They will be going live EVERY WEDNESDAY for at least the next TWO MONTHS!!!!!!!
Yeah, baby…
C
I wasn’t aware of john Chow so thank you for the superb introduction to him. I look forward to reading all his blog posts !
Hi RobM
You must be new to the internet marketing space, buddy. Enjoy – but as RobC said, dont go too far into those archives, we might never see you here on the VBL Blog ever again!
C
@RobM, don’t read all his blog posts, you won’t leave the house in a year
Chris, really enjoyed this one. I’ve read John’s free ebook and I would recommend it to anyone. I also remember seeing the video of him in the park with his daughter – it’s really appealing and brings me back to why I’m doing this. He’s a really great guy to talk to because he’s been around for years in the internet marketing space, even before he started blogging, so he definitely know his onions!
Hi Rob
Onions, potatoes, carrots, and a whole lot more!
Glad you enjoyed our conversation, it was a fun one to record, from a personal standpoint, too.
C
I love seeing genuinely great people like John Chow and yourself in this business Chris. You’re a great inspiration to me and the people who I’ve recently gotten to start their own blogs!
Hi Tyler
Thanks for the kind words – they are very much appreciated.
Please let me know if there is anything / anyONE you’d like to see on the blog… I’m all ears, as they say.
C
I actually noticed you’re using the ViperBar that Glen Allsopp made. I don’t know Glen personally but he’s been a huge inspiration for me the past few months with his recent blog posts and products and I’d love to see you interview him. Judging by his recent blog stats, Im sure a lot of other people would as well
Woops nevermind just did a search and found one! nice
Yep, that was a little while ago now…
But the info is evergreen in every sense of the word.
C
Hey Chris,
Thanks for making the interview available. I enjoyed doing it with you. See you at Blog World New York!
John
Hi John
Thanks for dropping by, much appreciated – and also for posting the video over at your blog, too. I saw plenty of great comments, and replied, too!
I certainly look forward to hanging out at BlogWorld – but, it’ll have to be LA in November, rather than the upcoming NY one. I have prior business commitments…
Thanks again, buddy
C
Hey Chris,
I see John Chow linked your interview on JohnChow.com. The introductions had an interesting piece:
“In addition to running a company that is helping to destroy the American workforce, Chris runs the Virtual Business Lifestyle blog.”
Care to comment?
Hi Stephen
I was curious to see whether someone would pick that out!
John has a good, bit sometimes strange sense of humor. He is very sharp, indeed.
If this comment was a serious one, that’s okay, he is entitled to his opinion, of course. Although my gut feeling is that it was simply in jest…
Thanks for dropping by, buddy.
C
I just found it funny.
Have a great day!
Like I said, he’s a fun guy.
Glad you enjoyed our chat.

The big part that I got from this interview is that success is NOT overnight like some would have you to believe. Well not overnight if you have to create the list as well as the product. If you have a product and you get another marketer to send your ad to his / her list then you have a chance of being an overnight success.
Hearing his insight about the blogging business was great.
Thank You
everything takes time brother, you cant grow a seed into a big tree full of fruits in a night you need to work hard on it for years and it will give you the result how you worked on it.
You’re welcome, Thom.
John is a wealth of blogging knowledge. Take it all in, bud.

Great Interview Chris! Good lessons from the Master John Chow. My favorite tip is CONSISTENCY!! Also a great example of what I call a “Micro-Multinational” business with followers, clients and probably employees from all over the world. Great inspiration to keep the work on my new blog!
Thanks for the comment, Jose. I hear ya on the consistency side of things.
I’ve noticed the more consistent I become on certain things (not just blogging), not only do I get better and that particular task, but I enjoy it more, too.
Practice does make perfect, I guess!
Thanks for dropping by.
C
Hey Chris, as promised, you delivered with yet another awesome interview!
I didn’t know that much about John Chow beforehand, but I’ve learned a lot now! The key aspect of this interview for me was the ‘consistency’ element. John has been doing this for a long time, and has built up his base over time by being consistent and patient.
Those are two qualities that you can’t teach someone out of a book. They aren’t “overnight tips and tricks”, you must develop your patience, consistency, and willpower over time. In other words, you must stay in the race
Hi Chris, I thought this was a great interview. What I thought was very interesting is that this is a blog that has grown out of self belief really. Posting two posts a day for 5 or so years. That’s a lot of posts.
But, it does show the importance of being consistent. Thanks for sharing brother!
Matthew
Two post a day isnt really that much, considering this is what John does for a full-time living. Think about it for a second… It’s like you or I having a 30min consultation call, or client call…
However, what John’s done excellently is knock out great content, very consistently… That’s been the winning factor.
Glad you enjoyed the chat I had with John. I was a fun one to do, too!
