VBL016 – Making the World Your Office, with Phil Montero

Mobile entrepreneurship is on the rise. More and more business owners nowadays are not wanting to be stuck behind a desk, or in the same office everyday. Times are changing. However, for todays guest, my good friend and creator of The Anywhere Office, Phil Montero, this has been the way of doing business for years and years already! Phil rocks when it comes to anything cloud computing related and was the one responsible for talking me into ‘moving to the cloud’ as part of my Virtual CEO goal. I’m glad he convinced me – its been awesome.

I thought it would be a great opportunity, going into the end of the year, when a lot of entrepreneurs are going to be re-evaluating the way they do business, to get Phil on the line (and the cam!) and have a chat about everything mobile business related.

You guys are in for a real treat here, as Phil and I discuss, amongst other things:

  • Why cloud computing is just so damn important for busy entrepreneurs.
  • How he lives his ‘anywhere office’ lifestyle everyday with his own workflow process.
  • How, regardless of what industry or the type of work you do every day, you can still live a more virtual work life.
  • How to grow your business without a brick n mortar set-up.
  • The tools required to run, grow and market your business without being super-glued to one location.
  • Tons more awesome stuff!

This podcast is an absolute MUST for any and all entrepreneurs that want to live life to the max, be mobile, get things done and make money on the hop. I can’t put enough emphasis on the importance, if thats where you need to be, to listen in on this interview.

Play or Download the audio of this podcast to listen to it on your iPod, iPhone or iPad below, and be sure to subscribe on iTunes, too!

As you can see / hear, Phil lays down gem after gem on this subject, and I am sure he’ll be happy to answer any additional questions you might come up with, based on our chat.

What I love about this philosophy, when it comes to doing business, is that it just reiterates what we say here on the blog all the time – you dont need to be stuck behind a big desk (regardless of how nice it it), to be invaluable when it comes to running / growing your business. The online world is a great world to live in, and the ‘anywhere office’ way of living is the ONLY way to go, as far as I’m concerned.

Go ahead and leave your messages / comments for Phil below and we’ll see you tomorrow, when we’ll be discussing ‘The Top 3 Online Tools for Getting Things Done’ as another VBL Discussion post hits the blog. See you tomorrow!

    • Hey Phil

Thanks again for finding the time.

I love the fact that all the way over there in Florida and I’m here in the Philippines… Yet chatting like that, via cam makes it feel as if we’ve known each other for years! Just awesome.

      Have a great Thanksgiving…

      Chris

  3. You guys make me jealous, intercontinental video interview n all. Phil, another resource to add to my list like Chris in the Phillipines. I strive to get where you are at.
I’d welcome your opinions and expertise on the subject in my LinkedIn group on Virtual Executive Leaders as I do Chris’. I feed this blog into the news feeds of that group.
It’s funny, I have a conference call set up next week with the renowned expert on the study of Virtual Distance, and it was set up by, you guessed it, a Virtual Assistant in CA working for her in NY.

      Hey Karl,

Thanks so much for the invite – your Virtual Executive Leaders LinkedIn group sounds very interesting. I will connect with you and LinkedIn and be happy to join your group. I look forward to the discussions.

And that is funny about the VA – gotta practice what you preach! I look forward to connecting and thanks again for the positive feedback!

      Phil

  4. Phil, Chris, great stuff! I can personally attest to the value of IM in the business environment from my experience working for a multinational tech company on a team scattered across the US, Costa Rica and Malaysia. It does save a lot of meetings, and you can still add a personal touch. I found that after I had once met my Malaysia coworkers in person that we would more frequently have non-business/relationship building type chats.

As Phil said, you can definitely be effective without ever meeting face to face. But it’s worth the effort and expense to do it at least once. It does change the dynamic of a relationship to meet in person. Chris and I can speak directly to that since we met up in Cebu a week ago. While we certainly had some good chats and a couple phone calls, there’s now a rapport that wasn’t there before we met face-to-face.

Now I’m off to check out The Anywhere Office. Thanks for sharing some great ideas!

    • Glad you enjoyed the chat, Mike.

Mirroring your comments, too. Hands down.

Hope you enjoy checking out Phil’s site. I love it!

    • Phil Montero says:

      Hey Mike,

Thanks so much for the comments – so glad you enjoyed the interview. Sometimes its hard to get Chris and I to stop talking about this stuff!

I couldn’t agree more about your comment on how the dynamic changes for virtual meetings and communication AFTER you have met someone face to face. In fact I would even say that simply meeting face-to-face via skype lends great impact to future email and phone conversations.

It’s one of the reasons I like to take relationships that start for me on Twitter and take them to the next level with a Skype video chat and then if possible a physical face-to-face meeting – although that is not always an option. Still waiting for the day Chris and I can sit down for a beer and jam some harmonica – LOL!

Thanks for checking out The Anywhere Office and for posting a comment there – much appreciated and welcome to the tribe.

      • I’m a big fan of that ‘beer and harp’ idea, Phil.

Lets make it happen next year, buddy – although its been a while since I picked up my harp, now that the ‘Soul Crusaders’ are no more. Bet you’d beat me on that side of things – however, being from London – I dont fancy your chances on the beer aspect of the meet!!!

        Chat soon,
        Chris

  5. Steve Wyman says:

    Hi

    Always via the blog :-)

    Happy christmas

  6. Karl says:

    Mike:
Better late than never. Just getting into skype and videochats, but if you read either of Karen Lojeski’s books on Virtual Distance, there is high data reference to the value of initial face-to-face contact (best in person) tremendously decreasing the Virtual Distance problems during a project when done early in the process, even with further discussions on the phone or email. Provides context and affinitiy.
