VBL009 – How to Live a Thrilling Lifestyle, with Cody McKibben!

As lifestyle designers go, my guest in this latest edition of the VBL Podcast, Cody McKibben, is a pretty cool cat. His blog, Thrilling Heroics is a thumper of a read, and although he doesnt do them nowhere near enough, his video posts are very enjoyable, shot around the world (mostly Asia) and give people the ‘real’ taste of lifestyle design that so many online surfers are looking for.

Originally from Sacramento, California, Cody is now living the internet lifestyle, working remotely from a number of different locations and consulting on anything from social media to web design and development. Our chat is an light-hearted look at lifestyle design and everything that goes along with it.

Amongst other things, we discuss:

  • How he started outsourcing to freelancers to get more done.
  • The things that keep him motivated day-to-day.
  • How he dodged the bullets and bombs this year, whilst living in Bangkok (literally!).
  • Why he encourages people to quit their job and become location independent.
  • The secret to utilizing Social Media to build your online brand.
  • Plus much more!

It’s talking with guys like Cody that continue to spur me on in regards to my Virtual CEO mission. At such a young age, this guy is doing what he wants to do, when he wants to do it, making money, living life and that – my dear readers/listeners/viewers – is what its all about!

Enjoy this conversation with Cody, and be sure to leave any feedback, comments and questions below, I’m sure he wont mind dropping by and answering them! See you next time…

    Hey Boss!

Really cool interview. And the sun’s still up when you shot it… Which is very rare since you come in usually late afternoon. Lol.

Must be great being a digital nomad. I know i would like to try it in the future.

But i think working 9-5 isn’t that bad at all especially if you got a boss like you! Haha no, I’m not sucking up. Really. *wink

Keep it up! See you in the office =)

    Steph

One of my hero’s. Great to see Cody on the cam. Chris, you are cranking out some great stuff lately!

  4. Thanks for the great interview Chris! Great to discuss these topics with you and to get my message out there to a new audience. Thanks! ;)

  5. Juha Liikala says:

Awesome interview guys. I think Cody was one of the first persons who influenced me personally to start looking out for a “alternative ways” to live my life and think about work (so thanks for that Cody!). Add in the 4-hour workweek to the mix and I was totally sold to the nomadic lifestyle. :D

It’s a great idea to include a audio only version of the interview btw. Think I’ll publish the NC interviews that way as well soon. The more ways to enjoy the content the better, right? Great job with the interview! Hope there’s more awesomeness coming soon! :)

    • Hi Juha

Nice to see you back on the blog, buddy.

Yep – a lot of people were commenting that that really enjoyed the audio version, as they could stick them onto their iPhones, iPods, etc. – so, when we got hooked up on iTunes, it was a no-brainer.

Glad that Cody has been a cool resource for you. He’s a great day.

      Regards,
      Chris

      • Juha Liikala says:

It’s fast becoming a norm to offer content to many different devices & audiences, and it’s frickin’ cool actually. Just watched few interviews through my friends “Internet@TV” the other day from his couch. Kinda cool.. :D

        • Yep – I’m also enjoying the way everyone seems to be covering a lot of different bases right now. It’s having a really positive effect on the content, too. Which is great!

          Chris

    • Thanks for that incredible compliment Juha! I’m really glad to have helped inspire you man, and I know you’ve come a long way! I’m only sorry I missed you when you were out here man! Next time

      • Juha Liikala says:

A compliment well deserved Cody! A bummer that the meetup didn’t work out, but no worries. Next time, like you said. Probably heading back there next year! Take care.

  6. Mars Dorian says:

    Kick-ass interview Chris, like always.

    I luv his approach – it’s ass-kicking.

Bangkok is a wild place – I went there many, many years ago.

Cody is truly living on his own terms.
It’s amazing what kind of career you can build if you start a blog.

As soon as I push my personal business into the big scene, I’ll go there too, at least for a few months.

    rock rock rock !

    • Hi Mars

Very cool that you dig the interview, man.

Yep – Bangkok is KILLER – I love the place. Easily in my Top 3 Asia places to hang out and have fun. Hands down.

I had a lot of fun doing this interview with Cody, he’s a cool guy and we definitely struck a chord together. That’s really what I want to do – rather than just interview people for the sake of it. There has to be a connection.

      Know what I mean…?

      Thanks for dropping by.

      Chris

    • It’d be killer to see you out here Mars! If I’m still here, that is! ;)

Gf and I might go live on the beach for a month or so down south to get outta the city, then maybe Bali, or maybe South America!

But, Thailand is definitely a killer place to live the digital nomad lifestyle. And BKK has some INCREDIBLE, giving, entrepreneurial, rockstar people!

      • Mars Dorian says:

        Cody,

        question:

        What about the internet connection.

This might be a trivial question,
but I have been to some Asian countries and the connection really sucked.
Do you encounter any major problems ?

(and BTW: how do you manage the VISA ? You are American, I’m European, but we normally can’t stay longer than a few months.

  7. Tony Ruiz says:

Great interview guys. I like how Cody write a mission statement. It really makes life easier when you know your purpose for the work you do and the life you live.

  8. Hey Milt!

Thanks for the kudos. Yeah, t’was a great chat…

Video – Audio… Text – whatever floats your boat my man, we do it all here at VBL!

    Thanks for dropping by.

    Chris

  9. Kirsty says:

It took a zillion years to load on this dodgy Rwandan net connection, but it was worth the wait. Great stuff guys… an fun interview with lots of quality tips for people looking to get started.

Chris I’ve only just found your site but I like it. You might see me around from time to time… net connection permitting, of course.

    Kirsty

  10. Nice interview lads. Was listening to it in the background.
