Tour of my ‘Mobile Office’ for my Upcoming U.S. ‘Pleasure Trip’

Location: Company Offices, Viewing / Reading Time: 4-5mins

Yesterday, before I left the office, I packed my laptop bag for our upcoming U.S. ‘Pleasure Trip’ (I call my business trips this because they aren’t necessarily vacations, but I don’t really see them as ‘business’ either, based on the fact that a) I always enjoy spending time with clients and like-minded entrepreneurs, and b) because I always make sure to get some ‘fun time’ in, too!), which we leave for in three days, as I knew I wouldn’t be going into the office today (spend time with family), and I thought it might be kinda cool to show you exactly what I am taking with me to be able to carry on working and running my business (which now has 171 full-time staff members) whilst away for the next two-and-a-bit weeks. So, here’s a quick video clip…

In a nutshell, to be able to carry on working when away, I am taking the following (this is always pretty much what I take):

  • My Laptop (Sony Vaio Z Series)
  • Blackberry Curve 8900 (Allowing access to ONE email address on the move, without having to be sitting in front of my laptop (which only my PA has) for urgent messages only!
  • Mini Mouse (Purchased in Thailand last year for $4.00)
  • Mini Skype Headset (It doesn’t get more ‘mobile’ than this, and it cost me just $3.00 here in the Philippines!)
  • External Hard-drive (Western Digital 320G) for photos and videos
  • Moleskin ‘Hemingway’ Notepad (Used these for YEARS, love them!)
  • 2 Books “The E-Myth Re-Visited” and “How to Become a Rainmaker” (Don’t need these to ‘work’, obviously, but I love reading!)
  • Dis-solvable Vit C (Gotta keep that immune system boosted when traveling!)
  • Business Cards

I’ll be posting my first Monthly Report in a couple of days, so be sure to check in and see what’s been going on in the first month of the year on my mission to become a Full-Time Virtual CEO. It’s been a really productive, memorable month…!

If you liked this post, please do leave a comment below – I love hearing from my readers, and reply to pretty much every one! You can also “Be Sweet and Retweet!” if you like, too. Thanks, everyone!

Nice travel pack for the upwardly mobile. Just a question though.. What if traveling and (God forbid) you lose, get stolen or damage any of your equipment that you need to stay connected? Is getting insurance on your Virtual Lifestyle’s equipment a good idea?

    • @Ray – Travel Insurance is a given on all trips, and will cover you for loses, of course. However, I also make sure that my PA has a back-up of any important files on her BlackBerry. This way, even if she is out of the office, she can get whatever I need, to me, without any delay. I also use several online tools, too, like Google Docs, and Google Cal, that allow you to store a lot of important stuff online, so you can access it anywhere in the world – as long as you can get to an internet connection – which generally isnt too tough nowadays. Thanks for commenting, bud.

i found it really interesting and i’m happy for you mate. And a bit jealous of the prices of the products that you talked about out there.

Hey brother good stuff you are coming to the U.S thats pretty good you have a safe trip Chris and much luck in all your adventures…

    • @Wilson – Yep, call immigration, the bald Brit is coming into town! Actually, in all seriousness, I’m really looking forward to this trip – lots of great stuff planned, and sitting down with a couple of really cool clients to talk about plans for the rest of the year and beyond. So, should be very fruitful.

Wow. That mouse is seriously sexy and small. Where in Thailand did you buy it Chris I am going there in 3 weeks from now. And what a great price.

    • @Justin – Thanks for the comment… Yeah, the prices in Thailand are always ‘right’. I cant remember the name of the store to be frank, but it was in the IT Mall near the Platinum Mall – it was insane… Over 1000 stores under one roof. Crazy! You can get them all over Asia though, so you shouldn’t have problems finding one!

  5. Hi Chris,
thanks a lot for that video. Some guys will maybe think that you are out of your senses showing this. But I think it’s really important for guys (like me) for getting to know how an outsourcing lifestyle really work in practice.

    • Hi Florian

All I am doing here is showing people exactly what I take with me on my trips, and how these things help me to ‘remain in the office’ when I’m not actually there.

Out of my senses…??? Why? If this helps people become more mobile and productive when they travel, then that is awesome!

      Thanks for commenting, bud.

    Hi Chris

A usefull video and list can i add some more ideas.

I have an external hard disk drive thats got a complete clone of my notebook on it which i auto update every time i add new apps. that way if the notebook breaks when the enginers fix it i can restore an image of my hard disk drive.

I also have my data backed up to the web service Drop box. with the 2gb they give me i have all my docs and wordpress setups plus more :-) and its free. You could sync whilst in the office for example. Once on dropbox any document can be read from any web browser incluing on my iphone ! thats ways neat. And if the norebook goes down any internet enabled PC and you can get to yur data.

Last one for today is Google. There service is so reliable. I use an google email account just to store data. by attaching files to an email and emailing to my baackup account i have a safe copy at all times. Also i send my monthly wordpress database and them backups to this account. 7GB of storage for free.

    regards

    • Hi Tom

Excellent comment, my man. Thank you.

I recently started using Dropbox myself and must say I am impressed with it. Great little resource.

I’m curious on how you set things up to do a complete clone of your notebook. Is there a piece of software you use? What system are you on, Mac or PC? I’d be interested to see how to do this properly, and more importantly – quickly and easily, too!

Thanks again for dropping by. Look forward to your reply – and more comments from you.

      All the best,
      Chris
